Decatur County Public Health has services aimed at promoting good health through exercise and nutrition. The Pick a Better Snack Program teaches nutrition in the classrooms at the Central Decatur elementary schools (preschool through 3rd grade classrooms) in a fun and interesting manner to motivate children to pick a better snack of fruits and vegetables. The health educator provides Pick a Better Snack curriculum, reads a nutrition story, has the kids do exercises, and lets all the kids in each classroom do taste-testing of fruit and vegetable snacks.
Key state partners include the Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Food Assistance, Iowa Department of Education-Team Nutrition, Iowa State University Extension, Iowans Fit for Life, and Iowa Women Infants Children (WIC).
